1 week update!! 24/05/12

Paige is doing very well. Her cord is starting to fall off and she is feeding well. She went from 8lb 6oz to 8lb 1oz and then back up to 8lb 3oz. It is completely normal for newborns to lose weight in the first few days and she should hopefully be back up to her birth weight by the time she is around 10 days old.  She had her heel prick test done by the midwife and that is one of the few times she has cried. She barely cried when she was born.. just cleared her lungs then laid happily in my arms. She is sleeping well and goes around 3 hours throughout the night between feeds. She is a very good baby and so far everything is perfect.

1 week old!!

I am healing well. The midwife checked my stitches and I do have a lot of swelling but it is going down nicely and everything is looking good. I've also being taking regular lavender baths and I have to say these are amazing. I'm not 100% sure if they are helping me heal but they are helping me to relax so in my eyes are worth it! I'm still a little sore but that is to be expected. My belly button is slowly going back in and my belly is slowly going down. I have noticed that my stretch marks seem to be fading which is good. Overall I am so tired but loving every second. I wouldn't change it for the world!

The Birth of Paige Ellen - Part 2

Thursday 17th May

Around 11am I had finally had enough so we went hospital. I had not slept more than half an hour since 4:30am Wednesday morning and couldn't handle the pains anymore. I was in tears and wondering how on Earth I would manage with the actual birth. I phoned the hospital and they seemed very reluctant to let me go in at first as my contractions still weren't very regular but agreed I could go in and be checked.

At 11:30am I got checked and was 5cm. I couldn't believe it. I cried! The contractions were finally doing something and baby girl was on her way. As Mark called family and friends to let them know I was officially in labour I tried to eat a sandwich as I hadn't managed to eat anything that morning and knew that i'd need some energy. My body didn't seem to want the sandwich and I was sick.

The midwife told us that they expected me to dilate at least half a centimeter an hour and if I wasn't making progress they would think about breaking my waters. By 15:30 I was checked again and was 7cm with a bulging bag of waters. I was only just meeting the requirement of half a centimeter an hour. The midwife nearly broke my waters but said she would wait and give me another two hours to see how I progressed.

I was then checked at 17:30 and was 8cm, my waters were still bulging. She decided that as I had just met my target for dilation she would leave my waters to go on there own. By this time I had such a big urge to push she told me to let my body do what felt natural so I pushed and at 18:15 I broke my own waters. It sounded like a balloon popping and I felt a huge relief as the pressure was horrible.

Mark went to get some fresh air and I had a big urge to push again. At this point I was still on the bed as I had just been checked. The midwife told me not to fight it and go with it. While I was pushing she had a quick look and said she could see baby girls hair. There was then a big rush to get Mark back into the room so he didn't miss the birth. He came back in the room and all I could say was that baby girl had lots of dark hair... he thought he had missed the birth completely, until I managed to explain, lol. The midwife then told me that if I still wanted a water birth I needed to make a move quickly because baby girl was on her way. So back in the water I went along with the trusted gas and air. While in the pool I kept lifting my bum out of water while I was pushing which wasn't allowed to happen when baby girls head was out as she would start breathing then once I put my bum back in the water she would inhale water. So Mark had to hold my hips under the water. I made sure he was stood far enough to the side so he couldn't see anything but later he told me that he saw baby girl shoot into the water as I gave birth to her. He also expressed how he was glad I kept lifting my bum up as he never would of seen otherwise.

So after only 38 minutes pushing Paige Ellen was born at 18:53 weighing 8lb 6oz. We all couldn't believe how big she was as at my last midwife appointment I was measuring nearly two weeks behind!! Her head measured 34.5cm and she was 49cm long. The midwife also said that she was born with her hand against her face... something she still likes to do now.

I sat with her in the pool for a few minutes in shock and completely amazed that she was finally here and laid in my arms. I then got out the pool, Mark cut the cord and I delivered the placenta naturally.

First Family Picture

I was in and out the birth pool throughout my labour and found it very relaxing in between contractions. I'd recommend it to anyone! The only pain relief I had was gas and air from around 8cm which I loved. Although I felt very drunk it made me less aware of the pain and gave me something to focus on while I was concentrating breathing it in. My contractions didn't get regular until I was around 7cm. I'm very glad we didn't wait until then as baby girl came quite quickly.

I had everything I planned for and wouldn't change a thing about the birth. Looking back I loved every second. The thing I remember most is feeling her feet come out of me as she was born.

The Birth of Paige Ellen - Part 1

I thought the best way to tell you all about my labour was to split it up into two parts as it happened over two days. So here is part 1 :D

Wednesday 16th May

It all started in the very early hours as I was woken up with belly ache and back ache at 4:30am. I woke Mark up and mentioned to him that I thought I was having contractions and maybe this was it... the excitment was obviously too much for him as he fell asleep, lol. To be honest I don't really blame him as i'd had so many pains and twinges in the past 3 weeks I too had gotten very bored of them. I laid in bed and timed a few of the contractions... they were lasting 40seconds and ranging from 4 - 8 minutes. As they were still quite irregular I tried my best to get some sleep just in case they developed.

Mark woke for work around 7am and I was still having contractions and needless to say hadn't fallen back asleep. He decided to go into work late and wait a couple of hours to see if they continued. They did but were still irregular so off to work he went. When he left for work I was pretty tired so went to lay down... I slept for 30 minutes before the contractions woke me up again.

They lasted all day and were around 8-10 minutes apart lasting 50 seconds. During the day I also lost parts of my mucus plug. By 18:20 my contractions were lasting 50 seconds and  3/4 minutes apart.

Off to the hospital we went. I was checked around 9pm and to my horror I was only 1cm!! The midwife went ahead and gave me a little stretch and sweep to help things along but I honestly felt like crying. I had dealt with contractions all day and was only 1cm dilated. I had no idea how I was going to manage another 9cm. The midwife was lovely and ran me a lavender bath to help me relax a little. She said that she thought we would have our baby girl in our arms within 24 hours, I prayed she was right.

We got home around 11pm and tried to get some rest. Mark managed to nap here and there but I couldn't sleep at all. The midwife was kind enough to let us borrow the hospitals tens machine which was amazing and helped a lot. I also had two baths during the night and cuddled up to a hot water bottle.

Needless to say it was a long night...

40 Weeks Pregnant

There were times when I thought I wouldn't reach 40 weeks pregnant. To be honest not many people thought I would. For some reason we all thought baby girl would be early... maybe it was wishful thinking. But now I have reached my due date I feel quite proud in a way that she is still cooking away and getting fatter by the hour hehe :D

It is quite disappointing to reach your due date and still be pregnant but I know that this is very common, especially in first time mums. And can you believe that only 5% of babies are born on their due date! Apart of me wishes there wasn't so much focus on your due date as the counting down is exciting at first then turns into a bit of a let down when you reach it and you still aren't holding your beautiful baby.

This week has gone so slow, which I fully expected! I have tried to keep both busy and relax at the same time as I know baby girl will be here soon and i'll be begging for some me time when i'm rushed off my feet looking after a newborn.

I'm still having cramps, pains, braxton hicks and heartburn. All the fun things that pregnant women have to cope with lol! I have also noticed a rise in back pain this week which I am putting down to the fact that my belly is HUGE!! I have yet more stretch marks which is to be expected.

Baby girl is still moving up a storm and trying to escape through my belly button/the side of my belly... I think I need to draw her a little map of the proper exit :D

Hopefully by this time next week I will be posting about my beautiful baby girl and not about my 41st week! I have a midwife appointment booked for this coming week for a stretch and sweep in case I haven't had her by then.

Trying to wait patiently,

Nicola xx

Happy Due Date!!

Happy Due Date Baby Girl!!

I can't believe that my due date has finally come. There were times when it felt like a million miles away and seemed like I'd never get there. But now it is here I am so excited to meet baby girl and I can't wait for labour to finally kick in.

See you soon baby girl.

39 Weeks Pregnant

Just one week to go!!

I had started to think that baby girl would be early but now as my due date creeps up on me I think she will be late. I know that a big percentage of babies are born after their due dates and it is very common to go over due, especially if it is your first baby. But it it very hard not to count down the days and expect something to happen.

Not much has changed this week. Still having loads of braxton hicks and pains. Baby girl is still moving up a storm in my belly... not quite sure how she still has room! I have noticed that I am nesting a lot more now and also finding it hard to sleep again. My body doesn't seem to understand that I am going to need all the energy I can get! In a strange way though i'm not super tired as I thought I would be.

I am trying my best to enjoy these last few weeks of pregnancy and get as much rest as possible. I keep thinking how strange it will be to not be able to feel her moving around inside my belly and feeling her hiccup or kick me. I really do think I will miss my bump.

Did you miss your bump?

Silly Braxton Hicks

So I have had braxton hicks contractions for what seems like forever now, it really is starting to annoy me. I know that they are your bodies way of preparing but seriously how much preparation does my body need lol. Bring on the real contractions already!!

They have built in frequency, length and strength but still lead nowhere. I have found out from other people that it can mean that labour will be a little shorter as when the real contractions finally start they are more effective but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

The pains I have had with these braxton hicks are no joke. And it makes it so much more annoying that they are only practice and not actually helping to do anything, well not that I know anyway. I am going to be a sucker when it comes to the real contractions, no idea how I am going to cope!

I spoke to my mum about all the pains I was having and it seems that she went through the exact same thing when she was pregnant with me. Quite interested to know if anyone else found this with their mum?

REVIEW - MumStuff - Big Bump Mug

Mark got me a lovely present that I think every mum to be should have... a pregnant mug!!

Isn't that the cutest mug you have ever seen?! I love it!!

I must admit that I do have a little obsession with mugs and have a little (ok, huge) collection so this was the perfect gift for me... Mark knows me too well :D

My mug is from a fabulous website called and you can find the link to the mug HERE

I have loved using this mug throughout my pregnancy. I think it is so cute, especially with the little hand and foot prints on the belly but you can get a plain mug if you prefer. It is also a very good size and defiantly helps me with remembering to drink lots of water.

I love everything on the website and wish I could have everything, hehe!! I am currently looking at their range of products for in labour, post labour, new and breastfeeding mums as this will be me soon :D They have some amazing products so check them out!! I will keep up updated if I manage to get my hands on anything else!

Did you have any special pregnancy/mum to be presents?

38 Weeks Pregnant

So 2 weeks until my due date and things have slowed down A LOT! Each day feels like a week, lol. I am fed up, ache all over and just generally want to get this baby out of me!

I'm still having a mountain of braxton hicks and pains. I keep telling myself that my body is just preparing itself and am trying to smile through them. This helps a little bit but I just want her out!

Midwife appointment went very well. Everything is perfect once again. Baby girl is ready to come so now it is just a waiting game until she decides when she wants her birthday to be :D
I don't go back to see my midwife now until I am 5 days over due. I am so hoping to have her by then but only time will tell. When do you think I will have her?

The baby swing and pram both came this week which officially means that we have everything we need for baby girl. Well the pram got delivered with a broken wheel so once the new wheel comes we will have everything we need, lol. I'm so excited for her to get here so she can use all of her things rather than them sitting around.

I feel like I need a little project to do to keep me entertained while I wait for baby girl to make her appearance. Any ideas? I'm going mad just waiting. How did you cope with the waiting?
