Wedding Planning - The Cake

When we started to plan the wedding the first thing I and many other brides think about is the dress. You can find my dress planning post HERE. The next is the cake! Well it was for me, I love cake. The more the better.

I also love baking but I could never imagine baking my own wedding cake although that would be pretty amazing.

I set about looking on Pinterest for some ideas. I never go on Pinterest, in actual fact it kind of annoys me because I just don't understand it. But for the wedding cake ideas I did actually find some very lovely ones.

We made an appointment with a cake designer and set off to discuss what we wanted. We wanted two tiers, something quite plain and classic without much fuss. Our max budget for a cake is around £80 with the hope of spending as little as possible. We have a pretty tight budget for everything!

The designer drew everything out and it looked amazing. We discussed a topper and how that would fit into the design. I have being looking on ebay and have seen some funny/pretty ones. I think we are going for a quite simple topper that we can keep long after the wedding is over.

The time in the appointment came where the lady told us the price.... £120!! For a more or less plain cake. My jaw hit the floor and Mark said that it written all over my face. I realise that £120 isn't all that expensive for a wedding cake and they can be very expensive for a detailed one but all we wanted was a plain cake with minimal decoration. We then discussed the possibility of having cupcakes instead but I really love the idea of the bride and groom cutting the cake so cupcakes weren't really for us. That and the fact that they were quite expensive too.... £1.50 for a cupcake with a swirl of icing on and some sprinkles. I could easily make them myself.

We are trying to save as much as we can. We want the wedding to be perfect but we also can't afford to spend a fortune. Our budget overall is less than £1000.

Feeling a bit down when we got home Mark decided to look online to see what he could find. We did find a lovely cake from M&S for a good price around our budget. When discussing the cake with my friend she suggested that she wanted to buy it us. She knows a lady who makes cakes. I sent her a picture of the kind of thing we wanted and she said that it isn't a problem. I have no idea what it will turn out like or how much it will cost. I'm a little nervous to be honest. I have seen previous cakes she has made and they look good. Fingers crossed ours is too!

A big thank you to my friend for helping us out. She wanted to get us a wedding present that we actually needed and would use :)

What was your wedding cake like?

Thanks for reading,

Nicola Xx

  1. We had a friends kindly gift us our wedding cake too because his mum makes cakes. It wasn't until I met with her to discuss what we wanted that I actually realised how expensive wedding cakes are to make. Fruit cakes or Madeira is the only thing that can stand the weight of marzipan, icing and then stacking other cakes on top, but the ingredients for that cost a bomb. I know when I made a small fruit cake it cost me about £20 in ingredients. Although the amount that wedding cake makers will charge for a fancy cake is ridiculous. It's definitely lucky to have someone offer to buy it as a present. And we had a relatively plain cake, just decorated with ribbon to match the bunting I made and some flowers that the florists added to it on the day. x

  2. Sounds like a great wedding gift! I love stories when people either exchange services or offer to contribute to your big day instead of giving you an actual gift - their kindness just for helping is so memorable and well...kind! The only problem you run into is if they'll actually follow through...we had a friend say she'd do our engagement pictures for our wedding present, but I guess she changed her mind and she gave us a gift card. Didn't matter either way, only if she'd let us know ahead of time that she was going to back out since now we don't really have engagement photos since we waited around for her offer.

  3. about the cake, before our wedding i allocate my chief bridesmaid to order a wedding cake and future mother in law to order cupcakes. So from experience of my sister (chief bridesmaid), price goes up when its a wedding (obviously) she looked thru catalogues to choose a cake and found out that you can actually order the same wedding cake as a standard cake, the same wedding cake was twice in a catalogue- once because it was a celebration cake and second time as wedding cake, the same cake!! with a huge difference in price, so bare this in mind) maybe sometimes just dont mention that you getting married, maybe its best to say that its a present or something)) we had 3 tier caked, flower toppers around, our names on it as well, it was lovely)

  6. Everyone loves a wedding cake and everybody loves to see how it looks like and tastes like. It's one of the most anticipated things in a wedding. Good thing you have a friend who wants to buy the cake for you. I bet it's going to be just as awesome as you wanted it. Have fun on the wedding. I know it's going to be really special. Congratulations!
