When we started to plan the wedding the first thing I and many other brides think about is the dress. You can find my dress planning post HERE. The next is the cake! Well it was for me, I love cake. The more the better.
I also love baking but I could never imagine baking my own wedding cake although that would be pretty amazing.
I set about looking on Pinterest for some ideas. I never go on Pinterest, in actual fact it kind of annoys me because I just don't understand it. But for the wedding cake ideas I did actually find some very lovely ones.
We made an appointment with a cake designer and set off to discuss what we wanted. We wanted two tiers, something quite plain and classic without much fuss. Our max budget for a cake is around £80 with the hope of spending as little as possible. We have a pretty tight budget for everything!
The designer drew everything out and it looked amazing. We discussed a topper and how that would fit into the design. I have being looking on ebay and have seen some funny/pretty ones. I think we are going for a quite simple topper that we can keep long after the wedding is over.
The time in the appointment came where the lady told us the price.... £120!! For a more or less plain cake. My jaw hit the floor and Mark said that it written all over my face. I realise that £120 isn't all that expensive for a wedding cake and they can be very expensive for a detailed one but all we wanted was a plain cake with minimal decoration. We then discussed the possibility of having cupcakes instead but I really love the idea of the bride and groom cutting the cake so cupcakes weren't really for us. That and the fact that they were quite expensive too.... £1.50 for a cupcake with a swirl of icing on and some sprinkles. I could easily make them myself.
We are trying to save as much as we can. We want the wedding to be perfect but we also can't afford to spend a fortune. Our budget overall is less than £1000.
Feeling a bit down when we got home Mark decided to look online to see what he could find. We did find a lovely cake from M&S for a good price around our budget. When discussing the cake with my friend she suggested that she wanted to buy it us. She knows a lady who makes cakes. I sent her a picture of the kind of thing we wanted and she said that it isn't a problem. I have no idea what it will turn out like or how much it will cost. I'm a little nervous to be honest. I have seen previous cakes she has made and they look good. Fingers crossed ours is too!
A big thank you to my friend for helping us out. She wanted to get us a wedding present that we actually needed and would use :)
What was your wedding cake like?
